Orthodontic Prep

If you’ve realized you may need braces because of problems with your teeth or jaw, your dentist may have referred you to an orthodontist. But what does that mean?

An orthodontist is a specialized dentist that works in diagnosing and treating dental and facial irregularities. If you have orthodontic-related tooth/jaw pain or have aesthetic issues, you’ll likely go through these orthodontic preparation steps:

  • Oral Exam – Once you are referred to an orthodontist and go through an initial consult, your orthodontist will conduct a thorough oral exam, including evaluation of your teeth, jaw and mouth to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment
  • X-Rays – In addition to your oral exam, it’s common for your orthodontist to order a series of X-rays to see the position of your teeth and how to improve them – a panoramic X-ray will be ordered to show the upper & lower teeth while biting to understand teeth development, and a specialized 3D  head X-ray may be utilized to determine the jaw relationship to your teeth
  • Potential Procedures – Depending on your case, your orthodontist may recommend tooth extraction if your mouth is too crowded – and in very rare cases, jaw repositioning surgery may be required before beginning other orthodontic treatment

Orthodontic Expectations

It’s important to note orthodontic treatment will be unique to you. Through a personalized treatment plan, you orthodontist will make sure treatment is conducive for your care through three main components:

  • Brackets – Custom-made and glued to teeth, so pressure can be applied to slowly move teeth
  • Archwire – Puts pressure on brackets and teeth to move teeth into specific position over time
  • Bands/Elastics – Sometimes used to help align bite through movement of upper & lower teeth, as well as the jaw
